USING SOCIAL MEDIA AND DO I REALLY HAVE TO?

10/02/2026
Honestly? The short answer is no, you don't have to. But unfortunately, without talking about your game in multiple places... well, fewer people are going to see it. The good news is that it is much simpler than it seems.

TL;DR, social media can give you a platform with global reach. While there's no guarantee of virality, and with the fluctuating and enshittification of so many established platforms, what matters most is focusing on authenticity, and lowest possible effort for the best return on investment.

So how do you use social media?

  • Pick your platforms.

Each platform has different audiences, different goals and foci. TikTok and YouTube are video-centric, Instagram likes photos but has been pushing video, BlueSky, Mastadon, and Reddit are mostly text... and this only scratches the surface.

Since every platform has its pros and cons, first decide on your goals for social media, whether it's engagement or click-through, or audience-building. Then focus on 1-2 that best align, or you just enjoy using the most. It's best to make it as painless as possible; you can always cross-post content.

  • Be consistent.

Posting consistently throughout the week or month will do so much more for you than posting erratically. The billionaire-backed social platforms in particular reward accounts that are regularly creating content and engaging in the ecosystem.

A few sites have social media calendar templates and suggestions, including HootSuite, Sprout Social, and Buffer.

  • Be authentic.

There are millions of social accounts out there, millions of people, bots, companies, all vying for attention. It is more important than ever to be yourself. Decide what your brand, your studio, your project IS, and stick with it.

Don't force yourself to chase viral trends or post more than feels sustainable. What matters most is be true to your vision.

  • Engage

This can be the hardest one. When and where possible, try to engage with people who engage with your posts. "Social media" is just that, social. It's meant to be a shared experience, a connective experience. Every interaction is a chance to build your community and find your audience.
